Congrats to all of the Bay to Breakers Finishers!

Bay to Breakers 2011: 7am - The weather looked either promising or ominous?

For many of today’s Bay to Breaker’s partiers, the race had ended before the first bottles of faderade were being mixed.  At 7:34:26am and 7:39:12am, Ridouane Harroufi (M) of Morroco and Lineth Chepkurui (F) of Kenya had respectively crossed the finish line.  The run was just getting started for the 55,000+ army of registered race entrants, in addition to the throngs of “crashers” who didn’t want to miss out on the City’s 100th race.  While I haven’t seen an official head count, the course was packed from the bay to the, well, breakers.  The course itself was the same as it has been since 1974, but the vibe stood out as a little calmer than in years’ past.  The entertainment along the course was reduced – anyone know where Meshugga Beach Party went?  The good news is that the rain let up – a few drops fell just after 8am and then again here and there, but Ocean Beach welcomed the finishers with beautiful rays of sunlight.

Cops were more active this year in trying to enforce the rules of the race road: many lost their beverages and a few were detained in the drunk tents that dotted the course.  As of the afternoon, a reported 17 people had been arrested for mostly public intoxication, and the cleanup had already begun.  No Bay to Breakers is complete without accident and injury – the latest I’ve heard is of a man plunging 30 feet after falling out of a window on Fell Street.  Tomorrow will provide a more accurate account of today’s events.

Probably my favorite part of Bay to Breakers is seeing the creativity that comes out of the costumes of runners, walkers, and partiers alike.  This morning’s train ride provided a sneak peek of the entertainment to come.  My costume?  Alvin & The Chipmunks – photo to come.

Best Black Swans, Ever

Anyone get any good shots?  Feel free to email them at  Got any good stories?  Loved any particular costumes?  Please share.  And thank you, San Francisco, for letting Bay to Breakers survive – and letting us survive it.

And one last photo that might sum up the day for some of you:

Done for the day?
