  • With a starting line blocks from the Ferry Building and a finish line along the Great Highway, this 7.46 mile race takes you from San Francisco Bay to the waves breaking at Ocean Beach.  2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the race.  Currently sold out, information about the event can be found here:

July 31, 2011 – The San Francisco Marathon

  • This race covers much of San Francisco – hills and all – and offers both a full marathon (26.2 miles) or allows you to race your preferred half of the race.  The full marathon and first half have starting times beginning at 5:30am; the second half offers a much later start at 8:15am.  This race as a full or half length guarantees to challenge the runner with more of an uphill battle.  However, there’s no better way to discover a city than to run through it. Registration can be found here:

August 27, 2011 – The Giant Race (5K, 10K, Half-Marathon)

  • Benefiting Project Open Hand (, this race offers a 5K, 10K, or Half-Marathon route.  Each length ends at home plate on the field of AT&T park!  This is a wonderful opportunity to run a mostly flat half marathon along San Francisco’s waterfront.  All runners receive t-shirts and bobbleheads.  The 10K is currently sold out.  If you’re new to running and want to try out your first race, the 5K is a great option.  Just over 3 miles in length, the course is completely flat and a very manageable distance for a novice runner.  Registration can be found here:

October 2, 2011 – San Jose Rock ‘n’ Roll (Half) Marathon

A relatively flat – and apparently pretty rocking – half and whole marathon course that takes you through downtown San Jose.  Registration for the half is $85 through 7/31/2011, and then goes up to $100.  More information can be found here.

November 6, 2011 – The US Half Marathon

This race starts and ends at Aquatic Park along San Francisco’s northern waterfront.  The course covers a very scenic route, taking you from the Marina Green and Chrissy Field up to the Golden Gate Bridge – and then across the bridge and back to Aquatic Park through Fort Mason.  There are some tough hills here – especially a small climb into mile 12, but the race ends with a long downhill sprint to the water’s edge.  This was the first (and only) half marathon I have ever run – and the morning day was perfect.  I had never walked across the Golden Gate Bridge before and running it without a single tourist in my way was the perfect solution to that.  Registration information can be found here:
